Working Cat Program

Thank you for your interest in Desert Paws Rescue’s Working Cat Program!

This program is designed to place cats who are more comfortable living in outdoor environments where they can thrive while contributing to your rodent-control needs. All they ask for in return is shelter, food, water, and care.

Our Working Cat Program is based on our Network Partner’s, Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, Working Cat Program.

Working Cats provide an environmentally friendly pest-control for barns, equestrian centers, warehouses, or anywhere that keeps large amounts of grain/food storage. All of our Working Cats are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and ear-tipped (this is where a small portion of the left ear is surgically removed allowing the community to easily identify that the cat has been fixed) prior to being eligible for our program and can range in personalities from feral to occasionally friendly. We recommend a minimum of two cats for each placement to provide a colony-type comradery for your new community cats.

A Working Cat requires a safe area where they can be confined with food, water, and a litter box for their first 3 – 4 weeks on your property, while the cat(s) learn(s) that this is their new home by adjusting to the sights, sounds, and smells of their surroundings. Specifically, they’ll need a warm and dry shelter where the cat(s) can stay when the weather is bad and can consider “home base” for their lifetime, access to food and clean water (providing daily food will not stop your working cat from stopping pests), a litter box or other acceptable place for elimination, and a human caregiver responsible for the cat’s well-being, including veterinary care, as needed.

Desert Paws Rescue will provide an enclosure large enough for your new Working Cats to acclimate to your property and retrieve the enclosure after the 3-4 week adjustment period.
